What's in a Climber's Bag? A Simple Snack and Shake Packing List
Shoes, chalk, harness, water bottle: every climber has a bag that's already full. If you're heading to the gym for a few hours, it's worth thinking about what else goes in. Here's a practical packing list for the wall, with ideas for something to eat and drink before, between and after your climbs.
The shake kit
- A sachet or two. Single-serve sachets are light, don't take up much room and don't need to be measured.
- A shaker with a whisk ball. It's what breaks up lumps. Rinse it as soon as you get home so it's ready for next time.
- A bottle of water or plant milk. Fill the shaker, add the powder, shake. If you're mixing at the gym, pour the liquid in first.
Something to snack on
Climbing sessions can be long, so a few easy-to-eat snacks are a good idea:
- A banana or other fruit that travels well
- Rice balls or a small sandwich
- A handful of nuts or a small bag of dried fruit
- A small container of oats, ready to stir into a shake
Pick what you'd actually enjoy eating. The best packing list is the one you'll really use.
A few small tips
- Keep your sachets dry. A sealed pocket in your bag works best.
- Pack a spare bag for the used shaker and any sticky wrappers.
- Think about where you'll mix. Most gyms have a water refill station, so you can fill up and shake without carrying a full bottle in.
- Take your shaker home empty. A quick rinse after each session stops any smell from building up.
